Q: How is a benign lump differentiated from a malignant one before deciding on removal?
A: Before proceeding with any treatment, we diagnose the nature of the breast lump using a combination of imaging tests such as mammograms, ultrasound, and sometimes MRI. If these tests can’t clearly define the lump as benign, a biopsy may be performed to distinguish between benign (non-cancerous) and malignant (cancerous) tissue.
Q: Can breast lumps recur after they have been removed?
Recurrence is generally low for benign lumps. In the case of cancerous lumps, the risk of recurrence depends on many factors, including the type of cancer, stage at diagnosis, margins of the removed tissue, and whether the patient receives additional treatments such as radiation or chemotherapy. Patients are monitored for any signs of recurrence.
